St. George’s Day is celebrated by several nations of which Saint George is the patron saint, including England. April 23 is the traditionally accepted date of Saint George’s death in 303.
Saint George’s emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England, and part of the British flag. St George’s emblem was adopted by Richard The Lion Heart and brought to England in the 12th century. The king’s soldiers wore it on their tunics to avoid confusion in battle.
St George was a Roman soldier who protested against the Romans’ torture of Christians and died for his beliefs. The popularity of St George in England stems from the time of the early Crusades when it is said that the Normans saw him in a vision and were victorious.

Woodrow Wilson said of the Scots, “Every line of strength in American history is a line coloured with Scottish blood.”

Numerous groups and societies throughout Canada and America have taken the anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath (April 6, 1320) as their national date to celebrate their Scottish roots.

On December 19th 1991, in response to action initiated by the Clans & Scottish Societies of Canada, the Ontario Legislature passed a resolution proclaiming April 6th as Tartan Day, following the example of other Canadian provinces.

America followed suit on March 20th 1998, when Senate Resolution 155 (S.Res. 155), proposed by US Senate Republican majority leader Trent Lott, was passed unanimously.
